Melidoni Cave has been associated with various historical and mythological events throughout the ages. One of the most notable events tied to the cave is the tragic story of the Battle of Melidoni during the Cretan Revolution against Ottoman rule. In 1824, hundreds of civilians were seeking refuge in the cave, and the Ottomans, seeking to quash the rebellion, barricaded the entrance and set fire to it, leading to a devastating loss of life.
The cave has also offered important archaeological insights, with the discovery of artifacts and evidence of human activity dating back thousands of years.
Next visiting is the Honey Museum in Melidoni village which is a fantastic place to explore the world of beekeeping and honey production. In addition to learning about the history and significance of honey on the island, you also have the opportunity to taste unique bee products. The museum provides a wonderful educational experience for all ages, and it’s a great way to appreciate the importance of bees and honey in Cretan culture.
Our next destination is Margarites a famous village for its pottery production of Minoan inspiration. Strolling through the narrow streets of Margarites, you will see beautifully decorated doors and walls from the times of Venetian rule. The village gives a real sense of what Cretan villages were like in past centuries.
